For those who respect and value the sanctity of life, January 22nd is a somber date as it was 43

years ago today that the United States Supreme Court issued the landmark and ill-founded

ruling in Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion throughout the United States. Those of us who

believe that all life should be celebrated and protected from conception through natural death

continue to believe not only is every unborn child entitled to the right to life, but also a loving

home. As an adoptive parent myself I understand very well that providing such a home to a

child in need adds nothing but love to the lives of the entire family.

 

The Declaration of Independence, our nation’s founding document, proclaims “We hold these

truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their

Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of

Happiness.” It is the foundation of our free nation that the right to life is an unalienable right,

given by God, and all life must be protected.

 

Today, countless Americans will descend on Washington, DC for the annual March for Life.

They will march from the Washington Monument to the United States Supreme Court to vividly

show their commitment to life. This year I was proud to sponsor the travel for many of the

Students for Life of Michigan so that they could participate in this solemn ceremony, but

unfortunately the travel plans for many were canceled due to the blizzard in Washington. Now

we are going to use that support to find alternative ways for these young people to show their

support of the Pro-Life cause. I thank them for their commitment and determination, and to all

Americans who join together to support life.
